Portiuncula Indulgence

August 2, 2020

Participants of the Mass on Sunday, August 2nd, can receive the Portiuncula Indulgence.

The plenary Portiuncula indulgence is connected with the legend according to which the Mother of God, appearing to St.  Francis, surrounded by angels, said that in return for his zeal for the salvation of souls, he could ask for any grace he wished.

St. Francis asked that everyone, after having made a contrite confession and visiting the Portiuncula chapel, could receive a plenary indulgence and forgiveness of all sins. At the request of Francis, this privilege was approved by Pope Honorius III.

Initially, the full indulgence of the Portiuncula could only be obtained on August 2nd in the Church of Our Lady of the Angels in Assisi.

From the fourteenth century, popes began to grant it also to individual Franciscan churches. In 1911, Pope Pius X extended the privilege to all churches.

The conditions to obtain the Plenary Indulgence of the Forgiveness of Assisi is as follows:

- Sacramental Confession to be in God’s grace (during eight days before or after)

- Participation in the Holy Mass and Eucharist

- Recitation of The Apostles Creed, Our Father, Hail Mary and Glory Be for the Pope’s Intentions
